Structural investigations are the physical works that support a structural engineer’s assessment when non-destructive testing alone is not enough. Reinforcement needs to be exposed and its condition checked. Section thickness needs to be verified against drawings. Concealed connections need to be opened up. Cover to reinforcement needs to be measured directly, not just estimated by cover meter. Suspected corrosion needs to be seen, not just inferred from half-cell potential mapping.

The investigation is delivered against the structural engineer’s brief. Where CRS is appointed directly by the client, we coordinate the engineer’s input into the scope. Where the engineer is already appointed, we work to their specification and provide the physical opening-up, sampling, measurement and photographic documentation the engineer needs to complete the assessment.

Investigation work is quality-critical. A poorly executed breakout damages the structure, biases the sample, or fails to expose what the engineer needs to see. CRS operatives are trained to open up controlled areas cleanly, protect the surrounding structure, take samples to defined protocols, and reinstate the investigation area to a specified standard. Photographs and measurements are recorded systematically and provided as part of the deliverable.

Where the investigation reveals wider issues, CRS can extend the scope or hand back to the engineer for direction, depending on the client’s procurement preference. Where the investigation feeds into a repair specification, CRS can be appointed for the follow-on works or for specification writing without any obligation to competitive tender the repair contract.

Controlled removal of concrete cover to expose reinforcement for direct condition assessment, cover verification and corrosion measurement. Delivered to a defined area size to minimise damage to the structure.

Controlled Breakouts

Larger-scale breakouts to expose connections, embedded elements, section thickness or hidden defects. Coordinated with the engineer and temporary works where the breakout affects load paths.

Core Extraction & Sampling

Diamond core extraction for laboratory analysis including compressive strength, chloride profiling, petrographic examination and carbonation testing. Cores extracted to sampling protocols the tests require.

Cover & Section Measurement

Direct measurement of cover, section thickness and reinforcement diameter following controlled exposure. Documented against drawings or as-built records.

Photographic & Measurement Documentation

Systematic photographic record of each investigation location, before, during and after opening-up. Measurements, mapping and observations documented in a format suitable for engineer analysis.

Reinstatement of Investigation Areas

Reinstatement of opened-up areas using appropriate repair mortars, restoring cover, appearance and durability. Reinstatement delivered to the client’s or engineer’s specified standard.

Our process

1. Discuss & Scope

Initial conversation with the client or engineer to understand the question the investigation needs to answer, the scope of opening-up required, and any structural or access constraints. Investigation plan agreed before mobilisation.

2. Mobilise & Investigate

Site setup, access provision, temporary works installation where required, controlled opening-up, sampling and measurement. Photographs and observations recorded systematically. Structural engineer input coordinated where the investigation reveals unexpected findings.

3. Reinstate & Document

Reinstatement of opened-up areas to the specified standard. Compilation of the investigation deliverable including photographs, measurements, sample records and site observations.

4. Handover & Next Steps

Deliverables handed to the engineer or client. Where follow-on specification, tender support or repair works are wanted, these are quoted and delivered separately from the investigation.

Frequently asked questions

A structural investigation is a physical opening-up exercise, typically driven by a structural engineer, to establish the actual condition and construction of a structure. It is used where drawings are missing or unreliable, where hidden defects are suspected, where a proposed change of use requires load capacity verification, or where non-destructive testing has raised questions that need direct confirmation. It differs from a condition survey in that it involves physical breakouts rather than just visual and NDT inspection.

As little as possible. Investigation work is planned to expose only what the engineer needs to see, using controlled breakout areas sized to the specific question being answered. Cover exposure areas are typically 300mm square or smaller. Larger breakouts are used only where the engineer specifies them. All opened-up areas are reinstated to a specified standard as part of the investigation deliverable, so the structure is returned to a durable and finished condition once the work is complete.

Both are possible. Where the client has a structural engineer already appointed, CRS delivers the physical investigation to their specification and provides the deliverables they need to complete their assessment. Where the client needs to appoint an engineer, we can arrange coordination with an engineer from our professional network. We do not act as the engineer of record on structural schemes.

Yes. Core extraction for compressive strength testing, chloride profiling, carbonation depth analysis and petrographic examination is delivered as part of investigation work where the engineer or testing programme requires it. Cores are extracted to sampling protocols the tests specify and coordinated with UKAS-accredited testing laboratories. Results feed back into the investigation deliverable.

Yes. CRS can be appointed as Principal Contractor on schemes where required, with full CDM 2015 compliance. On investigation work delivered under an existing Principal Contractor, we work as their specialist sub-contractor and provide the technical and safety documentation their role requires.
