Drone surveys have changed what is possible in high-level building and structure inspection. A drone can capture high-resolution imagery of a full elevation in a fraction of the time and cost of scaffold or MEWP access. It can inspect elements that were previously inaccessible without significant safety exposure or programme delay. It can provide the initial visual assessment that informs where more detailed rope access or physical investigation is worth deploying.

CRS coordinates drone survey capability as part of our inspection service. Drone flights are delivered by CAA-authorised specialist operators from our network, working under CRS coordination and integrated into the wider inspection deliverable. This ensures the drone survey is delivered by qualified operators to the required regulatory standard, and integrates cleanly with the concrete repair, structural investigation or condition assessment that follows.

The applications where drone surveys deliver most value are structures where standard access is impractical, disproportionate or unsafe. High-rise façade inspection where scaffold or rope access are not yet in place. Roof-level inspection on large or complex roof structures. A drone survey is one input into a wider inspection picture. It captures excellent visual data but cannot sound the substrate for loose material, cannot measure defects with a gauge, and cannot take samples for investigation. Where the client needs a genuine condition assessment rather than a visual overview, we typically combine drone inspection with close-quarters rope access inspection of the areas of concern. This gives the client the coverage of drone with the resolution of physical inspection, at lower total cost than close inspection of the whole structure.

Output is a structured inspection report including high-resolution imagery, defect mapping, severity ratings and recommendations. Where the drone survey identifies areas requiring closer investigation, this is quoted and delivered separately or integrated into the same programme.

Our process

1. Discuss & Scope

Initial conversation to understand the structure, the elements of concern, and the decisions the survey needs to inform. Airspace, flight authorisation, weather and access constraints assessed at this stage.

2. Coordinate & Mobilise

Coordination with the CAA-authorised drone operator, permissions confirmed, flight plan agreed with the client, and site attendance arranged.

3. Survey & Capture

Drone flight to the agreed plan, high-resolution imagery captured across the structure, and any client-specified additional data (thermal, photogrammetry) recorded.

4. Analyse, Report & Next Steps

Imagery reviewed by an experienced inspector, defects identified and mapped, and a structured report produced with recommendations. Follow-on close-quarters inspection or repair works quoted separately if the client wants to progress them.
