Rope access is the most efficient inspection method for structures where standard access is disproportionate, impractical or unsafe. A properly trained rope access team can inspect elements that would otherwise require scaffold, MEWP under-bridge units, cherry pickers or elaborate temporary works. The cost differential is significant, the programme differential more so, and the safety record of the discipline is well established when delivered by qualified operatives to industry standards.

CRS delivers rope access inspection using IRATA Level 3 rope access operatives held in-house. IRATA (the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association) sets the recognised industry standard for rope access work in the UK, with Level 3 being the most senior qualification. A Level 3 operative can supervise a rope access team, plan the operations, rescue colleagues from ropes if required, and take responsibility for the safety of the whole rope access operation on site.

The applications where rope access inspection makes commercial sense span a wide range. High-rise residential and commercial façade inspection. The commercial case is often compelling. A three-person rope access team can inspect the external envelope of a residential block in one to three days, delivering close-quarters coverage that would take one to two weeks of scaffold installation, one to two weeks of inspection, and then scaffold dismantling. There is no scaffold licence required from the local authority, no highway closure for scaffold erection, and residents are not overlooked for weeks by shrouding of the elevation. For inspection work, the case for rope access over scaffold is often self-evident once presented.

Rope access inspection is delivered as a discipline in its own right, and integrated into wider inspection deliverables where the scope requires it. A rope access team can inspect the façade and identify defects on day one, then return with follow-on repair operatives (or repair operatives who are also rope-qualified) to deliver the works. Our process

1. Discuss & Scope

Initial conversation to understand the structure, the elements of concern, and whether rope access is the right method for the scope. Rigging points, anchor availability, exclusion zones and any working-at-height constraints assessed at this stage.

2. Mobilise & Rig

Rope access team mobilisation, anchor installation or use of existing anchors, rigging inspection, ground-level exclusion zones set up, and safety briefing completed before rope work begins.

3. Inspect & Record

Close-quarters inspection to the agreed methodology, physical sounding, defect mapping, photographic recording and measurement. Any immediate make-safe works delivered on the same mobilisation where identified.

4. De-Rig, Report & Next Steps

Rope access equipment de-rigged and site handed back. Findings compiled into a structured report with defect mapping, photographs and prioritised recommendations. Follow-on repair or investigation quoted separately.

Frequently asked questions

IRATA (the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association) is the recognised UK and international standard for rope access work. There are three levels of IRATA qualification. Level 1 operatives can work on ropes under supervision. Level 2 operatives have more experience and can undertake more complex tasks. Level 3 operatives are the most qualified: they can supervise a rope access team, plan the operations, take responsibility for safety on site, and perform rescue if a colleague is stuck or injured on ropes. Any commercial rope access job requires at least one Level 3 operative on site to sign off the safety of the operation.

The safety record of IRATA rope access work is well documented and compares favourably with other forms of working at height. Because rope access operatives are always secured to two independent lines and are actively engaged in their own safety at all times, the discipline has a lower incident rate than many alternative access methods. Scaffold has different risks (falls during erection and dismantling, load failure, edge protection failure) rather than being inherently safer. The right access method for any job depends on the scope, the structure and the operational context, not a generic safety comparison.

Depends on the structure and the depth of inspection required. A three-person rope access team carrying out close-quarters inspection with defect mapping and sounding can typically cover the full external envelope of a mid-rise residential block in one to three days. A tall high-rise or a complex industrial structure takes longer. For general visual inspection without physical sounding, coverage is faster. We give an honest estimate at scoping so cost and programme are clear.

Building owner permission is required for any rope access work on their structure. Local authority licences are not generally required for rope access in the way they are for scaffold, which is one of the operational advantages. Where the rope access work involves overhead activity above public routes, appropriate exclusion zones and traffic management may be needed. All of this is assessed and arranged at scoping.
