Concrete cutting, coring and diamond drilling are the enabling techniques that make most structural repair and refurbishment work possible. Openings for services and access. Cores for sampling and testing. Anchor holes for post-installed reinforcement, cathodic protection connections and structural fixings. Controlled section removal for repair, alteration or demolition. Every substantial concrete refurbishment project involves cutting, coring or drilling at some stage, and the quality of that work directly affects the repair that follows.

CRS delivers cutting, coring and diamond drilling as an integrated part of our concrete repair and refurbishment capability. Unlike a standalone cutting contractor, we understand what the cut or the core is for, and we deliver it to the tolerance the following work requires. A core taken for chloride profiling needs to be extracted intact and without contamination. An anchor hole for a cathodic protection connection needs to be sized and cleaned to the system specification. A cut for section removal needs to leave a clean edge for the reinstatement that follows.

The full toolkit is delivered in-house. Diamond core drilling from 8mm sampling cores through to 600mm+ structural openings. Wall sawing, floor sawing and track sawing for controlled section removal. Wire sawing for large sections and complex geometries. Hand-held cutting and grinding for small-scale work. Controlled demolition using hydraulic breakers, crushers and specialist attachments where the scope requires it.

Diamond Core Drilling

Core drilling from small-diameter sampling cores through to large structural openings. Delivered dry or wet depending on the substrate, application and dust management requirements.

Wall Sawing & Floor Sawing

Track-mounted wall sawing and floor sawing for controlled section removal, opening formation, joint cutting and expansion joint preparation. Clean cuts to defined depth and line.

Wire Sawing

Diamond wire sawing for large section removal, complex geometries, foundation cutting and situations where other cutting methods are impractical. Suitable for reinforced concrete of any thickness.

Controlled Demolition

Selective demolition of concrete and masonry using hydraulic breakers, crushers and specialist attachments. Delivered as part of wider repair or refurbishment programmes with structural monitoring where required.

Coring for Testing & Investigation

Core extraction for compressive strength testing, chloride profiling, carbonation depth analysis and other laboratory investigation. Cores extracted intact and to the sampling protocol the test requires.

Anchor & Fixing Holes

Precision drilling of holes for post-installed reinforcement, structural anchors, cathodic protection connections, cable routes and building services. Sized and prepared to the specification the following works require.

Our process

1. Survey & Diagnose

On-site assessment of the cutting or drilling operation, structural implications, access requirements and services present in the area. Where load paths are affected, coordination with the engineer to define temporary works requirements.

2. Specify & Cost

A written specification setting out the cutting or drilling scope, methodology, temporary works (where required), water and dust management, and access requirements. Costed against a defensible bill of quantities.

3. Mobilise & Deliver

Site setup, temporary works installation where specified, water and dust management, cutting or drilling delivery to specification, and structural monitoring during the operation where required.

4. Protect & Hand Over

Reinstatement of temporary works, cleaning and handover of the cut or drilled area to the following work. Where the operation is part of a wider CRS repair scheme, the repair follows directly. Handover pack covering the works completed and any relevant technical documentation.

Frequently asked questions

All three use diamond-tipped tools to cut through concrete, but they are different operations. Diamond core drilling extracts a cylindrical core from the structure, either for sampling or to create a circular opening. Wall and floor sawing use a diamond blade on a track-mounted or hand-held saw to make straight cuts, typically for section removal or joint cutting. Wire sawing uses a continuous diamond wire for large-section or complex-geometry cuts. Each has applications where it is the right tool.

Yes, and much of our work is delivered in occupied commercial, residential and industrial environments. Dust suppression, water management, noise control, working hours and access coordination are all planned into the programme. For low-vibration or vibration-sensitive environments, wire sawing and controlled diamond cutting minimise transmitted vibration compared to breaker-based demolition. Programme is planned with the client to minimise disruption.

Yes, and this is where cutting delivered by a repair specialist rather than a standalone cutting contractor makes a difference. Where the operation affects load paths, we coordinate with the structural engineer to define temporary works, install propping or needling before cutting begins, monitor the structure during the operation, and reinstate the load path through the following repair. This work requires close coordination between cutting, temporary works and repair, which is why we deliver it as an integrated capability.

Yes. Core extraction for compressive strength testing, chloride profiling, carbonation depth analysis, petrographic analysis and other laboratory tests is delivered as part of our surveys and investigations capability. Cores are extracted intact, labelled, and delivered to the client’s specified testing laboratory to the sampling protocol the test requires. Where the coring is part of a wider condition survey, the results feed directly into the CRS specification and repair programme.

Yes. CRS can be appointed as Principal Contractor on schemes where required, with full CDM 2015 compliance. On projects where a different Principal Contractor is appointed, we work as their specialist sub-contractor and provide the technical and safety documentation their role requires.
