Project overview

Concrete Repair Solutions were appointed to undertake targeted concrete repair and corrosion control works to Fort Road Bridge in Tilbury, Essex.

The scope focused on the North Abutment, where areas of deteriorated concrete and reinforcement corrosion required controlled removal, treatment, installation of galvanic protection, and reinstatement using spray-applied repair systems.

The works formed part of a durability-led intervention to reinstate structural integrity and mitigate ongoing corrosion risk within a live bridge environment.

What we did

Broke out defective concrete cover using hydro-demolition techniques

Exposed and grit blasted reinforcement to remove corrosion products

Installed PatchGuard galvanic anodes at 350mm centres

Reinstated concrete cover using spray-applied repair mortar

Delivered works in a controlled and sequenced manner appropriate to an operational bridge structure

Installed waterproof membrane to upper landing

Technical overview

Fort Road Bridge is a two-span reinforced concrete road bridge spanning over the London, Tilbury and Southend railway line.

The structure comprises north and south abutments with a central reinforced concrete pier, cast in-situ. The deck slab is formed of reinforced concrete with a tarmac waterproofing detail applied to the deck surfaces. The deck is supported on five arched beams with cantilevered edges along the full span.

The repair methodology addressed localised deterioration to the North Abutment. Hydro-demolition was used to achieve controlled breakout and preserve sound substrate. Reinforcement was mechanically prepared prior to installation of galvanic anodes to provide ongoing corrosion mitigation at repair perimeters. Concrete cover was reinstated using a spray-applied repair system suitable for structural bridge environments.

The outcome
