Project overview

Concrete Repair Solutions were appointed to undertake concrete and render repairs together with protective coating works to reinforced concrete elements at Wandle Valley Sewage Pumping Station, London.

The scope focused on the pump house structure, addressing deterioration to exposed reinforced concrete elements, cracking within structural components and the application of protective coating systems to enhance durability both internally and externally.

The works formed part of a targeted refurbishment strategy to reinstate structural integrity and provide long-term environmental protection within an operational utilities facility.

Technical overview

Wandle Valley SPS comprises multiple structures housing pumps and operational equipment serving the sewage pumping station.

The structure forming the focus of the works is a single-storey reinforced concrete framed building, constructed with in-situ cast reinforced concrete columns and beams supporting a ribbed reinforced concrete flat roof slab. The walls are formed in solid masonry, with exposed beam ends extending in cantilever at roof level.

The central section of the pump house rises above the surrounding roof and incorporates a reinforced concrete louvre vent and roof monitor with single-glazed, metal-framed windows.

The repair methodology addressed localised concrete deterioration, reinforcement corrosion and structural cracking. Defective concrete was mechanically removed to expose sound substrate. Reinforcement was cleaned and treated prior to reinstatement with suitable repair mortar systems.

Cracked areas were prepared and resin injected to restore structural continuity. Following completion of localised repairs, a fairing coat was applied across exposed concrete surfaces to provide uniform profile and surface consistency. A protective anti-carbonation coating system was then applied internally and externally to enhance durability within the aggressive environmental conditions associated with a sewage pumping facility.
