Project overview

Concrete Repair Solutions were appointed to undertake repair and protective coating works to the reinforced concrete elements of Kingsbrook Basin in Aylesbury.

The works focused on the perimeter and low-level reinforced concrete capping beams forming part of the basin structure. The scope included removal of defective concrete, reinstatement using hand-applied repair systems, and application of protective and decorative coating systems appropriate to the environment.

The project formed part of ongoing maintenance within a residential development to enhance durability, safety and visual finish of exposed structural elements.

What we did

Cleaned existing concrete surfaces using high-pressure water jetting

Removed defective concrete cover via mechanical breakout

Repaired deteriorated areas using hand-placed concrete repair mortar

Applied a suitable fairing coat to exposed beam surfaces

Applied decorative protective coating to perimeter capping beam (above water level)

Applied non-slip epoxy resin coating to the south side low-level beam at water level

Technical overview

Kingsbrook Basin is an artificial body of water situated within the Kingsbrook housing development in Aylesbury.

The structure comprises masonry retaining walls with a reinforced concrete capping beam. Gabions are incorporated within the basin to create shallow habitat areas, and the southern end of the structure features stepped access down to water level.

The repair methodology addressed localised deterioration to both the perimeter and low-level capping beams. Surfaces were cleaned using high-pressure water jetting to remove contaminants and prepare substrate. Defective concrete was mechanically removed, and repairs were reinstated using suitable hand-applied mortar systems.

Following reinstatement, a fairing coat was applied to achieve consistent surface finish prior to application of protective coating systems. Above water level, decorative coating was applied to enhance durability and appearance. At the south water-level beam, a non-slip epoxy resin system was installed to improve safety and wear resistance in a high-exposure area.
