Spillway Edge Beam Dowel Installation

River Roding, near Romford, September 2026

Water & Wastewater

Project overview

Concrete Repair Solutions were appointed to install new stainless steel dowels along the precast concrete edge beams of a flood storage spillway on the River Roding, near Romford.

Working as a specialist contractor on a major flood defence scheme, our team drilled and resin-fixed more than 430 dowels along the length of the spillway slope, ready for the next stage of construction.

The works were completed quickly and accurately on a busy live construction site, alongside the main contractor’s ongoing operations.

What we did

Setting Out & Drilling

Confirmed every dowel position along the edge beams
Drilled each hole to a consistent depth and angle
Used a drilling guide to keep every hole uniform

Hole Preparation

Cleaned each hole with compressed air
Brushed out every hole ready for resin
Checked holes before installation

Resin-Fixed Dowels

Injected high-performance epoxy resin
Set stainless steel dowels to the required projection
Checked alignment with a digital angle gauge

Completion

Over 430 dowels installed along the spillway
Additional positions completed as instructed by the client
Work areas left clean and safe on completion

Technical overview

The spillway slope is faced with Grasscrete precast concrete units, held in place along their edges by precast concrete edge beams. New stainless steel dowels were needed along these beams to connect them securely to the adjoining construction.

With hundreds of positions to install, consistency was key. Every hole was drilled, cleaned and prepared to the same standard before a dowel was fitted.

Each 20mm stainless steel dowel was bedded in a high-performance epoxy resin, giving a strong, durable fixing suited to a water infrastructure environment.

Alignment was checked with a digital angle gauge as the works progressed, so every dowel finished in the correct position for the following works.

Project challenges

  • Working on a live flood defence construction site alongside other trades
  • Drilling accurately into precast units on a sloping spillway
  • Keeping every one of over 430 dowels consistent in depth and alignment
  • Delivering to a tight programme so the next stage could follow on

The outcome

All dowels were installed along the spillway edge beams and the works were completed on 25 September 2026.

Each installation was carried out to the resin manufacturer’s requirements and checked for alignment, giving the client confidence in the finished connection.

The client received a full photographic record and handover pack, backed by a 12-month workmanship warranty.
