Boundary Fence Replacement & Retaining Wall

Willesden, London, April 2026

Commercial & Industrial

Project overview

Concrete Repair Solutions were appointed to replace a failed section of boundary fencing at a sports and leisure centre in Willesden, north-west London.

The existing concrete panel fencing had deteriorated and was being pushed over by tree growth and failing ground behind it. The scope included vegetation and tree clearance, removal of the old fence line, construction of a new reinforced retaining wall where ground levels changed, and installation of approximately 50 linear metres of new fencing on concrete posts.

The centre remained open throughout, with the works zone fully segregated from the public.

What we did

Site Clearance & Tree Removal

Cut back and removed vegetation along the fence line
Felled trees affecting the boundary and removed arisings off site
Ground out stumps and backfilled the voids

Fence Removal

Dismantled and removed the failed concrete panel fencing
Removed defective posts along the boundary
Disposed of all waste off site in line with waste regulations

Reinforced Retaining Wall

Excavated a 600mm wide x 600mm deep foundation trench
Cast a concrete trench foundation
Built the wall in 140mm dense hollow concrete blocks (7.3N), up to five courses
Installed reinforcement and filled the block cores with concrete

New Fencing & Gates

CAT scanned post positions before excavation
Installed reinforced slotted concrete posts, concreted into position
Fitted 150mm concrete gravel boards and 1.8m heavy-duty overlap panels
Supplied and installed two new gates and frames

Technical overview

The boundary runs between the leisure centre grounds and neighbouring properties and driveways. Over time, tree roots and shifting ground had pushed the old concrete panel fence out of line, leaving sections leaning, broken or collapsed.

Following clearance, the original fence line was removed and the ground assessed. Where levels changed along the boundary, a reinforced retaining wall was introduced to hold the ground and provide a stable base for the new fence line.

The retaining wall was built on a 600mm x 600mm concrete trench foundation using 140mm dense hollow blocks, reinforced and core-filled with concrete to form a solid retaining structure.

The new fence uses 2.7m reinforced slotted concrete posts with 150mm concrete gravel boards and 1.8m heavy-duty overlap timber panels, giving an overall height of 1.95m. Concrete posts and gravel boards keep the timber clear of the ground for a longer service life.

Project challenges

  • Working alongside a live sports and leisure centre open to the public
  • Removing mature trees and roots that had displaced the old fence
  • Retaining failing ground where levels changed along the boundary
  • Working next to neighbouring driveways, patios and walkways

The outcome

The boundary was fully cleared and rebuilt, with the new retaining wall stabilising the ground and approximately 50 linear metres of new fencing installed on concrete posts and gravel boards.

Throughout the works the site was kept secure with Heras fencing, signage and a dedicated works entrance, so the centre stayed open to members and the public.

The new boundary is secure, straight and low-maintenance, and two new gates were added to complete the line.
