Project Case Study

Project Title: Cumberland Place, Southampton – Concrete Repairs & Fairing Coat Application

Location: Cumberland Place, Southampton

Sector: Commercial / Office

Project Overview

Concrete Repair Solutions were appointed to undertake façade concrete repairs and fairing coat application at the White Building, Cumberland Place, Southampton.

The works were delivered in coordination with the principal contractor during a window replacement programme. During façade access works, areas of loose render and defective concrete were identified. CRS were appointed to survey, assess and remediate affected areas to restore structural integrity and provide a consistent external finish.

The project was undertaken within a live, occupied multi-storey office building environment.

What We Did

  • Undertook façade survey via mast climbers to identify defective areas
  • Marked up locations of loose and hollow render and concrete
  • Removed defective and delaminated render and concrete
  • Cleaned and prepared exposed reinforcement
  • Applied corrosion inhibiting primer and bonding preparation
  • Reinstated concrete using suitable repair mortar systems
  • Applied fairing coat to repaired areas to match existing façade finish

Technical Overview

The White Building at Cumberland Place is a multi-storey commercial office building with rendered façade elements and exposed reinforced concrete components.

During the principal contractor’s window replacement works, areas of defective render and hollow concrete were identified to the façade. CRS were engaged to carry out a detailed survey using mast climber access platforms to assess the extent of deterioration.

Defective materials were carefully removed to expose sound substrate and reinforcement where necessary. Exposed steel was cleaned and treated prior to reinstatement. Repairs were undertaken using compatible concrete repair systems, reinstating structural sections where required.

A fairing coat was applied to all repaired areas to achieve a uniform surface profile and ensure visual consistency across the façade.

Project Challenges

  • Working alongside a principal contractor within a live façade replacement programme
  • Operating via mast climber access on a multi-storey elevation
  • Maintaining safety within an occupied office building
  • Achieving a seamless aesthetic match to existing façade finishes

Outcome

The completed works reinstated the integrity of deteriorated façade elements and addressed areas of hollow and defective render and concrete.

Application of the fairing coat ensured a consistent external appearance across repaired sections, supporting the ongoing refurbishment programme and maintaining the building’s visual and structural performance.
