Project Case Study
Project Title: Puddle Dock, London – Façade Cleaning & Rope Access Works
Location: Puddle Dock, London
Sector: Commercial / Office
Project Overview
Concrete Repair Solutions were instructed to undertake specialist façade cleaning works to Mermaid House, Puddle Dock, London.
The project involved external access via rope techniques to clean the stone elevations of this prominent Central London commercial building. Due to the location on a busy main road, the works required full traffic management measures and were delivered during out-of-hours night shifts to minimise disruption.
The scope focused on deep cleaning of the stone façade and adjacent glazing to improve the building’s appearance and remove environmental staining.
What We Did
- Designed and implemented traffic management measures on a busy Central London road
- Undertook out-of-hours night works to reduce disruption
- Accessed external elevations via rope access (abseil) techniques
- Deep cleaned stone façades using Doff cleaning system
- Cleaned all windows adjacent to the working areas
Technical Overview
Mermaid House is a multi-storey commercial office building located in Central London, with natural stone façade elements exposed to urban pollution and environmental staining.
Given the building’s prominent roadside location, works required careful planning and coordination. Traffic management measures were implemented to ensure safe working zones adjacent to the carriageway.
Rope access techniques were utilised to allow efficient and controlled access to the elevations without the need for full scaffold installation. A Doff steam-based cleaning system (or equivalent approved method) was used to gently remove accumulated dirt, algae and atmospheric staining from the stone surfaces while preserving the integrity of the substrate.
Adjacent glazing was cleaned following façade works to ensure a consistent and improved overall finish.
Project Challenges
- Working adjacent to a busy Central London roadway
- Delivering works during night shifts to minimise disruption
- Implementing safe rope access operations in a constrained urban environment
- Cleaning natural stone without damaging the substrate
Outcome
The completed works significantly improved the visual appearance of the stone façade, removing environmental staining and restoring the building’s external presentation.
All works were delivered safely, with effective traffic management and controlled night operations ensuring minimal disruption to surrounding businesses and road users.
